Comics!

I love band humor. Unfortunately there is not much on the web that is new and original for band humor. "Whats the range of a tuba? 20 Yards if you have a good arm" is only entertaining so many times.

However, recently I discovered a website where John Bogenschutz regularly posts new material in his comic series which he titles Tone Deaf. These comics are absolutely hilarious and completely original. I highly recommend checking them out! Great job Mr. Bogenschutz!

Exciting news!

Well, I'm currently having conversations with an instrument dealer. There may be more instrument reviews coming on the site in the not too distant future! Very excited about this possibility.

To those who celebrate, Happy Easter!

Practice Mutes

Ever been in a situation where you wanted (or needed) to practice yet the situation required that volume had to be low? Thats where practice mutes come in.

Practice mutes are mutes that usually look much like straight mutes which are inserted into the bell. Their purpose is the keep the volume low as to not annoy those around you. However, most practice mutes are notorious for causing intonation problems, inconsistency in partials, excessive resistance, and  generally causing bad habits.

Here is an article reviewing 5 of the most common trombone practice mutes. The mutes tested are: Wallace, Softone, Humes and Berg, Dennis Wick, and Yamaha Silent Brass.

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir 2.0

Eric Whitacre has always been one of my favorite composers. "Lux Aurumque," "Sleep," and "October" are some of my favorite pieces by him.

He has pulled off the incredible. This evening he released the video of the Virtual Choir 2.0 singing "Sleep." The choir consisted of an amazing 2052 voices! Wow! This video is very powerful. The music is beautiful and the video fits very well. When they zoom out to show all the singers, its breath taking.
